SYMPOSIUM
we shall organize an International Scientific Meeting entitled
Design of Metal Structures
on the occasion of the
70th birthday of Prof. József Farkas.
It will be held in the University of Miskolc at 12th of December (Friday) 1997. Several invited scientists will take part on this meeting and will have a lecture on it. The lectures will be published in a special issue of the Publications of the University of Miskolc.
If you would like to participate in this Meeting, please inform us and send your exact address and e-mail address.
There is no registration fee on this Meeting, but we can cover for the invited lecturers the accommodation and meals, not the travel expenses.
We are looking forward to meet you in Miskolc.

The University of Miskolc was founded in 1949. However, two of the faculties, the Faculty of Mining Engineering and the Faculty of Metallurgical Engineering, were established in 1735 by the empress Maria-Theresia of the Habsburg family. The University of Miskolc has became one of the largest institutions of higher education in Hungary. There are about 11 000 full time and part time students and 700 academic and research persons.
The six faculties: the Faculty of Mining Engineering, the Faculty of Metallurgical Engineering, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Humanities, each headed by a dean, are largely independent.
The University of Miskolc is one of the most important research centers in Central Europe and has close links with other universities around the world. Scientific papers by the academic and research staffs are published, among others, in the periodicals entitled `Publications of the University of Miskolc'.
Miskolc is situated in North-East Hungary at the foothills of the Bükk mountains, 183 km to the North-East of Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. It is the third largest city in Hungary with a population of over 200.000. The outskirts of Miskolc abound in numerous sights including the greatest waterfall in the country, the famous swimming pools and spa of Miskolc-Tapolca and the plateau of the Bükk mountains which are covered with beech forests. Near Miskolc there are the two historic towns of Eger and Sárospatak and the world famous wine district of Tokaj.

TRAVEL
We expect that some participants will come to Miskolc via Budapest. Here are some useful hints.
--- Regardless of which terminal you arrive at, the best way to reach the downtown and connection to Miskolc is by the Airport Minibus service. They provide a door-to-door service to any point in Budapest for a fixed price which is 1200 HUF (about 6 US$)/person at present. Since theseminibuses usually take 5 to 8 people, the trip to downtown may last a bit longer than by a taxi (count on 1 hour; the trip is usually shorter) but it is considerably cheaper (a taxi costs over 2500 HUF). Ask the driver to take you to Keleti Pu. (Eastern Station).
--- If you have time and would like to experiment with the public transport system, you can take bus 93 from the airport to its final destination, the Kőbánya-Kispest metro station.
From there go by metro line 3 (the blue line) to Deák tér and change to line 2 (the red line) to Baross tér, Keleti pu. (in the direction of Örs vezér tér). Prepaid tickets can be purchased at ticket automats placed at the airport; you will need three urban tickets; one for the bus and two for the metro (each is HUF 60).
Most international trains arrive at Keleti Pu. (Eastern Station). A few of them, however, go to Nyugati Pu. (Western Station) or Déli Pu. (Southern Station). To get to Keleti Pu., the best way is to use the metro (from Nyugati Pu. take line 3 to Deák tér in the direction of Köbánya-Kispest and then line 2 to Keleti Pu. -- or from Déli Pu. take immediately line 2).
All trains from Budapest to Miskolc leave from Keleti Pu. One ticket (1st class) costs 1500 HUF (about 8 US$). Tickets for Miskolc can be purchased at the ticket office in the underground passage at the end of the station (connecting the station with the metro station). Here are some trains (for your convenience we list also trains coming from Miskolc):

Trains marked by IC are InterCity trains which are faster and usually more comfortable; for them you need a mandatory seat reservation (250 HUF).
Participants from Poland or East Slovakia are well advised to take the Cracowia Fast Train which departs from Cracow and stops in Kosice (Slovakia) and Miskolc.
A taxi in Miskolc from the train station to Miskolc-Tapolca (where some of the hotels are located) or to the University should cost around 600-800 HUF. You may also use public transport; you need prepaid tickets (55 HUF each) or you may buy them on the vehicle from the driver for 70 HUF; in the latter case the exact amount is required.
To get to the conference site, take any tram from the station and disembark at the fourth stop (the third one is in front of a department store CENTRUM ÁRUHÁZ on the right side; you should disembark at the next stop!)
At the cross road go to the left and take bus number 2 to the hotels in Miskolc-Tapolca or bus number 12 to the University. The main entrance to the University is at the end stop of bus number 12 (the third stop on campus). Registration on Friday is in the Central Library of the university if you go there get off at the second bus stop on campus.
Hotel Park is close to a stop of bus number 2, with signs posted for Hotel Park. You could ask the driver to let you off at Hotel Park.
In daytime it will take you about 30-45 minutes to get from the station to the university and Tapolca.
After getting to Miskolc, please follow the signs for Miskolc-Tapolca and Egyetemváros. The University of Miskolc (Miskolci Egyetem) will be marked.

All foreign visitors entering Hungary should possess valid passports. Participants from most European countries (and several others, including the USA) can enter Hungary without a visa. In case of doubt please consult a Hungarian embassy or consulate. We can issue an official invitation if needed.
FOREIGN EXCHANGE
Exchange offices are available at the Ferihegy airport, at railway stations, in hotels, banks and in the bank at the university.
You are advised not to change money if approached by individuals, even if good rates are offered -- cheating is very probable. Banks use practically the same rates, still you had better check the gap between buying and selling rates (the usual gap for major currencies is 5-8%). (Some exchange offices offer good rates only in case large amounts are exchanged.) There are open exchange offices at the airport and at railway stations. The one in Miskolc railway station is open till 7.30 p.m. on Sunday. At present 1 US$ is approx. 202 HUF, and 1 DM is approx. 108 HUF.
According to present regulations visitors are allowed to carry Hungarian Forints without limitation when entering or leaving the country. There is no limitation on foreign currencies either. 1 liter of hard liquor, 2 liters of vine and 2000 cigarettes can be brought into Hungary duty free.
The climate in Miskolc in December is cold. The average temperature in the middle of December is 10 oC. Accordingly warm clothing are appropriate.
